Saturday 8 th June is the date set for the 4 th round of the 2019 Burly Pro Gti Challenge season with more fierce action
scheduled to unfold on the black stuff. Spectators can catch all the thrilling race craft at the home of the Western
Cape’s premier circuit racing venue, Killarney International Raceway which will also be hosting the 4 th round of the
Wingfield Motors Power Series.
In Class A the old warhorse Nian “Race Muis” du Toit (Cheapercars/Allied Fibreglass Jetta III) looks to further increase
his advantage over the rest of the class as du Toit comes off a double victory in the previous round. But that won’t be
easy as current 2019 Polo Cup campaigners Jurie “Umpie” Swart (Alpine Autohaus Polo 6R) & Jano van der
Westhuizen (Wingfield Motors/Kwikfix Polo Vivo) will be right in the hunt to snatch victory from Race Muis.
Umpie Swart gave the Cape Town fans a reason to shout after taking his maiden victory in the previous round of the
Extreme Festival. With next round of the 2019 Polo Cup season scheduled to take place next weekend, both van der
Westhuizen & Umpie Swart will be using this round as preparation for the following weekend.
But the fight at the front could easily turn into a 5 way tussle as ex 2013 overall champion Christopher Swart (Village
Paint & Hardware Edgemead/Haasendal Jetta II) along with young superstar Colin Nicholas Meder (International
Tube Technology Polo 6R) have each seen the podium this season and will be looking to return to the rostrum on
In Class B a new car for the current class & overall champion Eden Thompson (Somerset Refrigeration/MAD
Performance Jetta II) could see the champion return to winning ways. But the mid class battle is building up to be yet
another red hot showdown as series chairman Zaki “Mr Worx” Hendricks (Wheelworx Polo Classic) returns to
competition and will be joined by Class C graduate Gideon Serfontein (Goeiehoop Onderdele Golf II GTi) who is
eagerly seeking to return to the top step. But the front 3 could find themselves with a thorn in their sides as a
wildcard entry by another old driver Ashley van Niekerk (Ashrome Electrical polo playa. Ex Marco Busi race car B79)
has the potential to make the fight for victory a fatal 4-way fight.
Just a tad further back is Mr. Consistency Wayne Field (Coetzee’s Auto Coachworks Jetta II) and showing signs of new
found pace, but will have to contend with series sponsor Emile Assure (Burly Pro/Krisp Air Cooling Polo 6R) who will
be seeking some much needed redemption after his previous round woes. Completing the class line up is rookie
Marc Thompson (Somerset Refrigeration/MAD Performance Polo Classic), and Grant Cloete with a newly built engine
in his mk1 golf. (Upstream Connect). One of the series sponsors as well. Is hoping to add more thorns to the above
The wolfpack in Class C will certainly bring even more entertainment as class & overall log leader Giordano Lupini’s
(SA Accelerate/LaVie de Luc/CIR Construction Golf I GTi) unbeaten streak finally came to end after the Vega
University Bcomm 1 st year looked to be untouchable at the front. The man who ended the magnificent run was none
other than inaugural overall champion Brett Roach (Mutual Auto Valet Golf I GTi) who has returned and will certainly
be looking at snatching the victory from the young gun.
But the fight at the front can quickly become a 4-way affair as Jared Simpson (Greenz Plumbing/Cape Refactory Golf I
GTi) & Alfie van Zyl (CD Motorsport/GT Graphics Golf I GTi) certainly have the pace to run with Roach & Lupini.
Another driver who could easily influence the fight is karter Jason Coetzee (Coetzee’s panel-shop Golf I GTi) after
having a big thump on the startline last round. With a freshly repaired vehicle, Coetzee should be back on pace and
causing havoc at the front. But a wildcard entry from yet another old driver Dillion Joubert (Tacsteel/Powder Coating
World Golf I GTi) could see the wolfpack have 6 drivers fighting for the top step.
With all the old guys retuning back to the grid, this Saturday will surely be exciting to say the least.
